stainless steel fridge

“Leave the gun, take the cannoli”

This is a classic line from The Godfather and it brings to mind an interesting predicament that many buyers face when they are about to purchase a home and have to decide on if they should ask that the homes existing refrigerator be thrown in with the sale or the home or not.

Don’t Take The Fridge

If the homes existing refrigerator is an older model that will mean one thing: big utility bill, because, older fridges aren’t made with the same technology as they are today and the buyer could find themselves having to pay more each month for electricity due to the homes older fridge.

“But It’s A Stainless Steel Fridge….”

Yes, the fridge may be stainless steel and go with your other appliances but it can easily consume up to 1, 000kWh per year more than an energy efficient fridge and why would you want to spend that extra money powering an older fridge when you can purchase a new one from stores like Home Depot or even Walmart?

Energy Efficiency Improving Each Year

One of the cool things about energy efficiency is that appliances like fridges are becoming more energy efficient each year.

From Wikipedia: “Efficient energy use, sometimes simply called energy efficiency, is the goal to reduce the amount of energy required to provide products and services. For example, insulating a home allows a building to use less heating and cooling energy to achieve and maintain a comfortable temperature. Installing fluorescent lights or natural skylights reduces the amount of energy required to attain the same level of illumination compared with using traditional incandescent light bulbs. Compact fluorescent lights use one-third the energy of incandescent lights and may last 6 to 10 times longer. Improvements in energy efficiency are generally achieved by adopting a more efficient technology or production processes or by application of commonly accepted methods to reduce energy losses.”
